Climate neutral gaseous and liquid energy carriers
|
GAVE is a government programme that supports the development and introduction of climate-neutral fuels in the Dutch transport sector. The programme's most important task is to support the implementation of the European Renewable Energy Directive into Dutch national legislation with respect to biofuels. This EU Directive states that, by the year 2020, 10% of the energy used in the transport sector must be derived from renewable energy.

Brazil and the Netherlands sign sustainable biofuels agreement Date published: Jul 10, 2012 |
Over the next 2 years Brazil and the Netherlands will intensify their cooperation on the development of biofuels that satisfy sustainability criteria. Both countries have also agreed to exchange knowledge about new technologies for using biomass to generate electricity. An agreement to this effect has been signed by Dutch Secretary of State Joop Atsma (Infrastructure and the Environment) and Luiz Figueiredo Machado, the chief Brazilian negotiator at Rio+20. Brazil is a major producer and supplier of renewable fuels, made for example from sugar cane or from organic waste residues such as wood pulp. Because 4.5% of the fuels brought to the Dutch market must now come from renewable sources, the demand for sustainable biofuels in the Netherlands has risen strongly. 'The Netherlands only wants to use biofuels where their production has no negative impact on, for example, agriculture, food production or Nature,' Atsma said. 'It is therefore important that the Netherlands lets countries and companies that produce biofuels know what our requirements for sustainability are, so that they can incorporate these into their production processes. This agreement will enable supply and demand to be perfectly matched.'. Dutch know-how will also be shared with Brazil, so that bioenergy can be produced in the Brazilian state of Maranhao. In this plant, organic waste residues such as wood pulp will be processed into biofuels, which can then used to generate energy. Source: rijksoverheid.nl |
