GAVE is a government programme that supports the development and introduction of climate-neutral fuels in the Dutch transport sector. The programme's most important task is to support the implementation of the European Renewable Energy Directive into Dutch national legislation with respect to biofuels. This EU Directive states that, by the year 2020, 10% of the energy used in the transport sector must be derived from renewable energy.

Dutch government aspires to fly on biokerosene
Date published: Jun 27, 2012
The Dutch government wants to fly on biofuel, and has already made a start on this. The government’s plane made KLM’s first transatlantic flight run on biokerosene. The plane - also used by Queen Beatrix - carried Dutch Secretary of State Joop Atsma (Infrastructure and the Environment) to the sustainbility summit in Rio de Janeiro. The plane flew on kerosene blended with processed Used Cooking Oil.

On his departure Atsma said his ambition was to make the government fly greener. “I want to ensure that renewable fuel can be purchased for business flights for civil servants. We must also make arrangements quickly so that the government’s aircraft is able to fly on a standard percentage of biofuel as from 2013,” Atsma said.

KLM and its partner Sky NRG also have far-reaching plans for their BioFuel Programme. The purpose of this programme is to give companies the option to fly on renewable fuel. It offers large organisations the chance to make some of their air journeys using sustainable biofuel. Companies such as Ahold, Accenture, DSM, Nike and Schiphol Group have already announced their intention to join.

Schiphol is the first airport where aircraft can refuel with a blend containing Used Cooking Oil. The oil comes from refineries in Amsterdam or Rotterdam. The Amsterdam-based Sky NRG, the largest supplier of biokerosene to the global aviation industry, is working on plans for a chain of bio-airports.

There are still no plans to allow individual travelers to offset their CO2 emissions from their flights against the purchase of biokerosene.
