Climate neutral gaseous and liquid energy carriers
|
GAVE is a government programme that supports the development and introduction of climate-neutral fuels in the Dutch transport sector. The programme's most important task is to support the implementation of the European Renewable Energy Directive into Dutch national legislation with respect to biofuels. This EU Directive states that, by the year 2020, 10% of the energy used in the transport sector must be derived from renewable energy.

NExBTL diesel from fish waste Date published: May 15, 2012 |
NExBTL is a renewable diesel variant developed by the Finnish company Neste Oil. The variant can replace normal diesel or can be blended in any ratio. At first the company mainly used palm oil, rapeseed oil and animal fats as raw materials. Following public discussions about the displacement of food crops and deforestation issues however, Neste has decided to change tack. They are now focussing their research efforts on new materials such as algae, jatropha and microbe oil.
To this range of raw materials, Neste has now added fat from fish waste. In Southeast Asia there is a high demand for farmed Pangasius fillets. There are large fish farms in Singapore and the surrounding area. Neste Oil also has a refinery in the region. The waste that remains after fish processing contains 30-35% fat. This fat is not suitable for human consumption due to the use of antibiotics and chemicals during the farming process.
Fish waste as a raw material for renewable diesel falls within the framework of the sustainability requirements in the EU's Renewable Energy Directive, and those of the USA. Source: greencarcongress.com |
