GAVE
Climate neutral gaseous and liquid energy carriers
|
GAVE is a government programme that supports the development and introduction of climate-neutral fuels in the Dutch transport sector.
The programme's most important task is to support the implementation of the European Renewable Energy Directive into Dutch national legislation with respect to biofuels.
This EU Directive states that, by the year 2020, 10% of the energy used in the transport sector must be derived from renewable energy.

Cellulose-ethanol demonstration based on Sunliquid process Date published: Jul 24, 2010 |
The German Süd-Chemie AG plans to construct a cellulose-ethanol demonstration plant in Munich, using the Sunliquid process. This large-scale demo will produce 2200 metric tons of ethanol. This is around 2.5 million litres of biofuel made from agricultural waste such as straw. The company plans to demonstrate its Sunliquid process. Small-scale tests have been carried out since 2009. Sunliquid concerns an integrated process with specific enzyme production (biocatalyst). The use of a particular type of enzyme has, until now, been largely dependent on the type of raw material. The biofuel manufacturers also depend on the innovative power of their suppliers of these enzymes. The company hopes to develop an enzyme-based hydrolysis method that can simultaneously convert cellulose fibres from various plant residues, such as wheat, corn, straw or energy crops. The hydrolysis then forms C5 and C6 sugars. The next step is to ferment this into ethanol.
The company is also working on more energy-efficient separation techniques for ethanol. Source: Greencarcongress |
