GAVE
Climate neutral gaseous and liquid energy carriers
|
GAVE is a government programme that supports the development and introduction of climate-neutral fuels in the Dutch transport sector.
The programme's most important task is to support the implementation of the European Renewable Energy Directive into Dutch national legislation with respect to biofuels.
This EU Directive states that, by the year 2020, 10% of the energy used in the transport sector must be derived from renewable energy.

ExxonMobile invests in algae technology Date published: Jul 15, 2010 |
ExxonMobile Corp has recently started constructing a facility to experiment with algae. According to Exxon, this is a logical next step in its biofuel programme. The company has reserved around 600 million dollars for the next six years, to be spent on the development of algae technology. Half of this amount will be invested in a company known as Synthetic Genomics Inc.
All investments focus on working towards large-scale production of biofuels that are financially viable. The new testing facility should be completed next year. Researchers will then start cultivating algae, but it is expected that, in the long term, genetically modified algae will be used. The team of researchers has defined hundreds of parameters that form the basis for this research.
In addition to identifying the genetic characteristics, the company views the eventual generation of algae-based oils as a huge challenge.
Over the past five years ExxonMobile has invested over 1.5 million dollars in developing new alternatives to fossil-based fuels such as oil and gas.
