The programme's most important task is to support the implementation of the European Renewable Energy Directive into Dutch national legislation with respect to biofuels. Shell considers joint venture in Brazil
Date published: Feb 1, 2010
Shell is looking into the possibility of a joint venture with the Brazilian ethanol manufacturer Cosan. The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding, with the aim of forming a joint venture to produce the biofuel ethanol, as well as sugar and energy. Shell announced this last Monday. The collaboration will have a total value of 12 billion dollars.
If the joint venture goes through, both concerns will merge various existing activities in Brazil. In addition, Shell will invest an extra 1.6 billion dollars in the joint venture over the next two years. The new combination should eventually become market leader in ethanol production. In time, the production capacity will be expanded to 2 billion litres per year, thus making the joint venture one of the world's largest manufacturers of ethanol.
